Washington DC

Well Im in DC now until December 17. I went and explored the main campus and picked up my AU ID. Not as many pretty girls up here, but it doesnt really matter, I doubt Ill have much time to flirt. My apartment and roommate look like theyll work out. The only 2 other things I have to worry about are my classes and my internship. I have to figure out the Metro very quickly.

Here, I will try to be helpful:

- AU is kind of a hike from the closest metro, but there is a shuttle from campus to the nearest metro-stop. AU is on the “red line”, which is the best (in my opinion). If you go north (towards Maryland), there is a fun little shopping center at Friendship Heights. In it there is Linens & Things, a movie theatre, Barnes & Noble, Cheesecake Factory, etc. Plus, Friendship Heights is technically in Maryland, so groceries are a lot cheaper (NOTE: never go grocery shopping in DC, because the taxes are so high that your bill will be at least 1/3 higher than it should be).
- Also on the “red line”: the National Zoo, Adams Morgan (great place on the weekends – lots of fun bars and pubs and most are open until 3 or 4 in the morning. Definitely check it out), Dupont Circle (this is where I lived for two years. It is a fun place – lots of bookstores and coffee shops. It is also the place where a lot of rallies and marches originate).
- Cosi is awesome. I really miss it now that I’ve moved back down here. They are all over DC and NYC. Great sandwiches and coffee. Yum. Plus they’re a hotspot, so you can bring your laptop and get work done.
- For Mexican food, go to Lauriol Plaza (1835 18th St., NW). It isn't completely Mexican (it's also Salvadoran and Cuban), but it's all delicious and well priced, and worth standing in line for (since the restaurant does not take reservations). They have great margaritas, too.
- If you like Greek, try Zorba’s CafĂ© (1612 20th St NW) in Dupont Circle. It is self-service and pretty cheap, but SOOOOO good.
- For brunch, the Front Page in Dupont Circle is very, very good. They have great Eggs Benedict. The Third Edition (same family of restaurants), in Georgetown, is also a lot of fun (good bar atmosphere, too).
- In Foggy Bottom (on the corner of 21st and I street) is a great, little burger joint called Lindy’s Red Lion. They will put anything you want on a burger (they have a list of about 25 different toppings). Lindy’s has they best fries in DC, hands down.
- Georgetown is a lot of fun, too. The metro doesn’t go there, but it isn’t a bad walk from the Foggy Bottom or Dupont Circle Metro on a nice day. If you walk down M Street there are a lot of fun little shops. Once you get closer to M and Wisconsin, though, the stores become more mainstream (Gap, J Crew, Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters, etc.). Parking sucks in Georgetown, so bring at least $10 with you so you can park in a lot if you drive.
- My FAVORITE restaurant in Georgetown in Clyde’s (3236 M Street, NW). Clyde’s is a chain, but the one in Georgetown is the original. Awesome atmosphere and great food (try the crab-cakes). It is a seasonal menu, so there is almost always something new to try. It is a little more pricy, but well worth it.
- The Tombs is my favorite lunch spot. It is also in Georgetown, and is located only a block or so from the university. A lot of Georgetown kids and professors have lunch there. It is located on the corner of 36th and Prospect and is underneath the restaurant 1789. The Tombs is also a great bar at night and during the weekends. A few scenes from the 80’s flick “St. Elmo’s Fire” were filmed at The Tombs, and the restaurant is located across the street from the top of the staircase that was used in the filming of the “Exorcist”.
- If you need to go to the mall, go to Pentagon City. It is huge and has its own Metro Stop on the “blue line”. Outside of the mall, there is also Pentagon Row which has a few more shops, a Costco and a Best Buy.
- Union Station, on the “red line” is the train hub in DC. Amtrak is generally well-priced and it is super easy to take the train to BWI airport (for cheaper airfare on Southwest and Air Tran), Baltimore or even NYC. Union Station also has a food court, shopping and a movie theatre.
- While you are in DC, make a point to go to see Great Falls in Virginia. There is a park there, and the waterfall is amazing.
- If you make it to Baltimore, definitely go to the inner harbor. Great food, fun and sights. One of my favorite places.
- Since you are in school at AU, take advantage of the consortium. With your student ID, you can access any university library in the DC area. You can also request and borrow books from other university libraries, and have them delivered to AU. Very, very convenient.

I don’t know where the pretty college girls are in DC, but I’ve heard that GWU and Georgetown have the most attractive co-eds. Georgetown is home to all the preppy kids, and GWU has a lot of kids from the east coast, New Jersey and New York. The University of Maryland has a lot of your classic “jock” types (or so I’ve heard). I don’t really know, though. After all, I was a graduate student in DC and graduate students are just dorks, really.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps. DC is a great town, and I really miss it. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions (or call the gnome and have her ask me).

Have fun!
